"We all want. But we are not ready yet"
The more talks about social media are held in Ukraine, the more clear is the situation when top-management is not ready to change their own stereotypes. They see the people, they see the competitors, they see examples from abroad, but when you point them on the necessity, on the opportunity, on the FACTS - they say, "well, we want the same thing. But we are not ready to spend our time". It's strange and ridiculous.
Even in podcasts (like PRPodcast from HOSHVA Agency) we can hear mentions of companies and PR-agencies which say "well, this sort of tools like SMM ones is not effective in Ukraine" while they use Facebook everyday for playing casual Flash-games. Do you think it's possible to play Mafia game, chat with colleagues through Facebook and look through websites with prices and lists of goods while saying "this doesn't wok for our people"? Who do you think you are, aliens from Mars? If it "works" for you, for your opinion, for your deeds and thoughts, why the hell do you consider average common people with ADSL-cable and PC to be a stupid consumer who still "piss on" TV commercials?
"We all want to be represented via web 2.0". Excellent, folks! "But we are not ready to communicate via Twitter, Facebook etc. because [blablabla-blabla-blabla].." It sounds like an old Jewish anecdote "God, give me money, give me money, dear God, I prayed for the wellness and prosperity for years, give me please...- (voice From Above)- Moishe!! How the hell can I give you money? Go and buy a lottery ticket or just go to your job!"
We want to be there but the way nobody can notice we are. Excellent. If Starbucks, Microsoft, Apple and Ford acted like you do, they'd completely lose "the game" with social media. It's impossible to keep "neutrality" towards your own brand in web 2.0 society.
Some companies say they have nothing to write about so they don't need a corporate blog or SM-profile, they just need "some promotion". If you've got nothing to say, WTH are you still on the market? Do you think this is the most effective way you can cope with competitors - just seat and watch while they are doing something in SMM? If you don't talk for your brand, people might start doing this instead, and than you'll have to fix the troubles (like it was with Domino Pizza in the US or with MacFoxy in Ukraine).
So the only problem here is to realize, that your clients want some kind of your social media presence. And you must be ready.

Brand protection: cover as many SM-services as you can
What is going on today on the market? Social media (SM) are on it. Do they work? We can say "yes" rather than "no". What is the main way to be effective on the market? I don't know. I only know that social media can rise the effectiveness of what you do today. People communicate, they chat, talk and phone you up. Social media is working while you sleep, and you can sleep while SM-services are covering the question of reputation. I don't want to tell you about the things which are clear enough for all who use social media. I want to tell you about the necessity of the so-called "brand protection" for using SM.
When I say "brand protection" I mean the representatives and accounts of your company in as many SM-sites and networks as you can, BUT only if these networks are from the target-market. There is no need to grab users from Vkontakte, Odnoklassniki or MySpace for determining your efficiency level in business if your company produces monster-trucks or Linux-based firewalls. But for monster-trucks the social network for truck-drivers is the target as well as geek-blog for Linux-based hardware-maker.
Covering wide range of targeted web 2.0 - resources gives your company an ability to protect your brand-name from cyber-squatters, from competitors and from "bad-buzz effect" over the clients, bloggers and journalists. Brand protection via SM-services gives an ability to cover informational field by the company, making opinions, spreading the news and information from the official source and covering the targeted audience online, selecting target, key values and giving the idea for the people - customers, partners, competitors, bloggers, journalists, business ideologists etc. What should you use? Well, it's a case of your own choice and specific features of your business. And as for the main trends - you'd better look at this presentation (this is about top leaders of the market, but their experience can be used in some aspects of your own SM "brand protection"):

User Experience

life's for singing
T-Mobile?!

Персональний бренд: what can be used?
1) участь у професійних соцмережах;
це дає змогу розширити коло спілкування, збільшити кількість контактів у споріднених із вашою діяльністю сферах; створити онлайн-візитку; отримати поради, рекомендації, запрошення до участі у вебінарах чи оффлайн-заходах, які вас цікавлять з позиції фахового зростання;
2) наявність власного блогу, сайту чи сторінки на Facebook;
це дає змогу створити портфоліо, налагодити постійну комунікацію із читачами та замовниками; показати свої здібності, свої думки та позицію з фахових, суспільних чи особистих питань широкому загалу, адже вас оцінюють не лише ваші колеги, підлеглі чи партнери: вас так чи інакше оцінює загал, з яким ви контактуєте через оффлайн- та онлайн-комунікації;
3) ввічливість у спілкуванні;
ніколи не знаєш, хто з цих випадкових чи невипадкових людей у мережі виявиться вашим клієнтом, керівником, замовником, майбутнім співробітником, співмешканцем у студентському гуртожитку; не запобігайте і не намагайтесь сподобатись: просто будьте ввічливими; ввічливості та адекватності дуже бракує у веб сьогодні;
4) вміння ставити вимоги та відповідати певним вимогам;
не погоджуйтесь лише на ті компроміси та ті вимоги, які йдуть врозріз із вашим баченням дозволеного, фахового, конструктивного, прийнятного з точки зору вас як людини;
5) вімння пропонувати нове і шукати нових пропозицій;
